How to Make Your Balloon Garland or Arch

by Tara's Wonderworld on Oct 31 2026
Follow these steps to assemble your balloon garland or arch. Check the quantities and shape guidance for the length you are making. What’s included Large balloons Mini 5-inch balloons, if included in your kit Plastic garland strip Nylon string Glue dots Before you startWork on a clean surface so dust and dirt do not stick to your balloons. Use a balloon pump and avoid overinflating them.Step 1: Inflate the large balloonsInflate equal numbers of 11-inch balloons in each colour to a mix of sizes between 8 and 10 inches. Some kits also contain 16-inch balloons. Garland length Large balloons Mini balloons, if included 1 metre 15 9 2 metres 30 15 3 metres 45 21 4 metres 60 27 For confetti balloons: rub the inflated balloons with your hands, a wool scarf or another piece of fabric to create static and help the confetti stick to the inside.Step 2: Attach balloons to the stripPush a balloon knot through the wide part of the first hole in the plastic strip, then slide it sideways into the narrow part to hold it in place. Add two more balloons to the next two holes. Mix colours, or use the same colour together for a rainbow garland.Leave one hole empty before adding the next group of three balloons. Filling every hole makes the garland bunch up. Repeat until all the large balloons are attached. The colours do not need to follow the same order each time. For 3-metre and 4-metre garlands, the strip may be longer than you need. Trim off the unused length after adding all the balloons.Step 3: Attach the hanging strings and choose the shapeCut the nylon string into two equal lengths. Tie one piece through the first hole at one end of the garland strip. For a classic garland: tie the second string to the other end of the strip. For an arch: tie the second string through a hole where you want the arch to start curving, such as halfway along or two-thirds along the strip.A classic garland shape is recommended for 1-metre and 2-metre kits. A 3-metre kit can form either shape. An arch shape is suggested for a 4-metre kit.Step 4: Hang and adjust your garlandUse the nylon strings to hang the garland where you want it on a wall or door frame. Gently rearrange the balloons to adjust the shape and distribute the colours.Step 5: Add the mini balloons, if includedInflate equal numbers of 5-inch mini balloons in each colour to different sizes between 3 and 4 inches. Use the quantities in the table above.Cut one glue dot from the backing strip, press it onto a mini balloon and peel away the paper. Stick the mini balloon onto one of the large balloons. Repeat with the remaining mini balloons.Step 6: Add any extra decorationsIf you wish, add foil balloons, snowflakes, banners, flowers or greenery. Use glue dots for small foil balloons and paper decorations. Tuck flowers and greenery between the balloons. Additional decorations are optional.Tips for caring for your garlandDo not overinflate the balloons. Keep 11-inch balloons to about 9–10 inches at most and 5-inch balloons to about 4 inches. Gently squeeze each inflated balloon between your hands, with the top and knot against your palms, for a rounder shape.Keep the garland away from direct sunlight and heat. Balloons may change colour or burst; confetti balloons can become less clear, and pearl or chrome balloons may turn matte. You can prepare the garland a day before your celebration. Store it in a room without extreme temperatures and replace any burst balloons with spares.Safety informationWarning: choking hazard. Children under eight years can choke or suffocate on uninflated or broken balloons. Adult supervision is required. Keep uninflated balloons away from children and discard broken balloons immediately.Take care when handling balloons near eyes. Eye protection is recommended when inflating balloons.
